The Old Palace Yard is adjacent to the Palace of Westminster (Parliament Buildings). The space was known as a site of executions most notably of Sir Walter Raleigh and Guy Fawkes.
The statue is of Richard I who ruled from 1189 to 1199. The statue of Richard Coeur de Lion was created by Baron Marochetti and first displayed at the Great Exhibition in 1851. It was moved to the Old Palace Yard afterward in 1860.
