Dates!

Near Palm Springs California and around the community of Mecca are numerous date farms.

You can drive the farm roads around this area and see miles and miles of date palms carrying their long strands of sweet fruit.  The farmers cover the clusters of dates with cloth or plastic bags to protect them from insects while they grow to maturity.

This is really interesting. I remember this kind of plastic protection on a banana farm, maybe in Costa Rica, not quite sure.

I have seen the bags around dates on trees in the Middle East, but never in California or Arizona. There is a former date farm right in Phoenix.

It must take a bit of time to cover all those bunches of dates.

I don't particularly like dates - they're OK, but not my favorite. However, one very hot summer we were driving from Phoenix to LA and we stopped here and we bought date shakes at a Dairy Queen. They were fantastic! But only one place in Phoenix offered them and I've never found them anywhere else.

The bags remind me of those awful bag worms we had in Texas! :)

And while I don't know of a NY Italian restaurant here, we have a NY pizza place for awhile but it went out of business.

I always want to stop and get one of those date shakes advertised on roadway signs. SWMBO says "Yuk! Keep drivin'"
