The Home of Grappa

The Italian town of Bassano del Grappa is know for inventing the spirit grappa, traditionally served as an after meal drink.  It's made from the discarded grape seeds, stems and stalks of the grape vines.  Today the town has a thriving tourist industry partly drawn by a covered, wooden bridge, it's very own Ponte Vecchio.

The view from the bridge is beautiful, even on a chilly and blustery day like the day I was there.

The first mention of this city dates back to the year 1150.

The city square or "piazza" is surrounded by historic buildings.  The one on the left has a gorgeous clock on it.

And the ever-present Venetian winged lion has a prominent place in the center.

It's a beautiful little town, well worth a visit.

Only one short visit to Italy in the past, but how I loved that country! Too bad their politics are so awful. I particularly like the two top photos. If you like gentle mysteries read some of Donna Leon's books, all set in Venice —I recommend them. The main character, Commissario Brunetti and his wife have great meals and always seem to be drinking grappa. Donna Leon herself is a very interesting character!

Back again. . ..Re. Donna Leon books: If you can, read her books in chronological order; in that way you get to know Commissario Brunetti's family and how they grow and develop. Over the years I've read every one of her books. Google her life also; she's a fascinating woman, an American expat with a love of opera, too. There's a Brunetti cookbook also!! PS. There's also a dramatic series, filmed by a German company that we have rented from the library, too.

Every time I see your pictures of Italy, I can't wait to go there myself and visit the towns where my grandparents grew up. Lovely pictures!

The Italians have a knack for creating beautiful towns, don't they? Maybe it is the colorful stucco buildings. Or the rivers. Or the hills. Or . . .

The medical grappa is said to be good to fight arthritis :-)
